mirko mielke: le confident / la causeuse

a series of wooden outdoor furniture benches and chairs was created by german
designer mirko mielke and showcased at his exhibition titled 'le confident'.

a key element of his designs was to signal a certain attitude about social interactions
rather than putting a focus on comfort. this is especially apparent in his double seater chair
which allows two people to sit in discreet distance of each other, thus, seeking to facilitate
conversational exchange amongst its users.

'That's an old one, you just forgot about it' | How Humans Forget and The Power of 'Newness'

This morning, my two year old Son came to me with a pink ball he had found lodged in between the dark and lonely space between his bed and the wall. He was ecstatic (as he has an unthinkable obsession with balls of all sorts at this age, tennis, soccer, football, you name it- he's all over it). Anyways, I found my son's genuine happiness and excitement escalated due to the fact that he thought this ball was "new".
Of course, as adults, we don't find old things stuffed away and think they are new, but there is something seriously fabulous about finding an old $50 in your jeans from last season or a forgotten chiffon scarf that fell between drawers...
This got me to thinking of a the "power of newness" and in the design industry, the essence of packaging. Nobody does it like the MAN himself: Karim Rashid. If you don't know of him or his fabulous books and design theory, believe me, it will CHANGE YOUR LIFE!
Below are excerpts from a presentation I recently gave to a bunch of graphic design students on the prolific icon that is "Karimanifestation".

Ooey Gooey

As a kid, I loved all things slimey, stretchy, and gooky. Unfortuantely, most of these things were only useful for putting permanent stains on my clothes and getting caught in my long hair. These little bookmarks are the perfectly mature & intellectual compliment for my silly attraction!
You can buy them direct from the designer here for $24.
